Not long before he takes center stage for the biggest final table of his life, Matt Giannetti has taken down the World Poker Tour Malta topping a 240-strong field for the $273,200 first-place prize, the WPT Champions Cup, and entry into the season X finale, the $25,500 WPT World Championship.
Initially it seemed Cecilia Pescaglini was unstoppable, knocking out many of her opponents, but it was November Niner Giannetti who stared her down in the end and took the title.
The final hand came when Pescaglini called Giannetti’s all in with Q 10 on a 10 8 2 board. Giannetti held 9 7 for the open-ended straight draw and did not have to wait too long as the J fell on the turn. He had to swerve a 9 on the river to stay ahead and he did as it fell the 2.
The Italian had to settle for $159,412 for her second-place finish. After his win, Giannetti tweeted, “God damn, I am a lucksack, so mad how I played, way too much run good expended… Happy I won but feel like I don’t deserve it.”
Here are the results and payouts:
1. Matt Giannetti — $273,200 (828 POY points)
2. Cecilia Pescaglini — $159,412 (690 POY points)
3. Filippo Bianchini — $104,936 (552 POY points)
4. Simon Trumper — $72,985 (414 POY points)
5. Tristan Clemencon — $54,381 (345 POY points)
6. Fabien Sartoris — $41,977 (276 POY points)
With it being a matter of time before we find out where Giannetti finishes in this year’s World Series of Poker main event, Clemencon was the only finalist who already had Card Player Player of The Year points nailed down for 2011. He added 345 points to increase his total to 537 for 821st place.
