Atlantis Casino Resort Spa Conference CenterDay 1A at the Card Player Poker Tour Atlantis Reno $1,080 no-limit hold’em main event saw 62 players battle on the tournament floor, while the surrounding high-desert Mountains of Northern Nevada provided a scenic backdrop. Among the runners today were Reno professional Steve Brecher (who unfortunately did not advance), and Howard “Tahoe” Andrew (who did advance with 95,800 in chips). Randy Gil was another familiar face to survive Day 1A (42,800), but he and every other one of Friday’s survivors will be chasing Alan Mastic when Day 2 begins on Sunday. Mastic holds 108,300 as the Day 1A chip leader.

Alan MasticTaylor Skeels from nearby Tahoe City, California on the shores of Lake Tahoe was the perennial chip leader for most of Day 1A. He was the first player to cross into six-figure territory, but after a chaotic last level of the night he bagged up 86,000, good for just seventh chip-position at the end of play. Six players including Mastic surpassed him as play came to a close. On one of the final hands of the night Mastic flopped a set against Art Tanimoto, who held top pair with an open-ended straight draw. When no help came Mastic won the big hand and grabbed the chip lead from Tanimoto, who finished with 100,000 on the dot.

Play ended around midnight PT and when Level 10 came to a close just 16 had advanced to Day 2. Saturday will feature another ten levels of poker action on Day 1B, and a larger field is expected to come out and play in the weekend starting flight of the tournament tomorrow. A number of players arrived to pre-register for Day 1B throughout the afternoon and evening at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa. Tune back in at noon tomorrow to follow along with all of the action in live updates on CardPlayer.com.
