Nikolaus TeichertEvent no. 56, the $2,500 no-limit hold’em tournament at the World Series of Poker drew 1,736 players and created a massive prize pool of $3,949,400. After an unscheduled fourth day of play the winner of the tournament was German player Nikolaus Teichert who took home his biggest career cash of $730,756 and first gold bracelet.

The 55-year-old precious metals trader from Dusseldorf, Germany just started playing poker seriously three years ago.

“I started playing about three years earlier,” Teichert explained. “I finished seventh place in one tournament which was the first I played, and then I won the same tournament the next year. With that money, I [went] to the 2011 WSOP.”

Teichert played an atypical game when he made it to the final table.

“I was playing with my heart,” he said. “I do not play the usual way. I had to do things a little differently.”

Teichert’s win scored him 1,620 Card Player Player of the Year Points moving him into 18th place overall.
