The Playground Poker Club in Montreal hosted the inaugural Card Player Poker Tour World Cup of Cards $1,650 CAD no-limit hold’em event this week. The tournament drew an impressive field of 359 entries to easily surpass the $400,0000 CAD guarantee, building a total prize pool of $522,345 CAD. In the end the lion’s share of that was awarded to Canadian native Brady Hinnegan, who defeated Thomas Larivee Magni heads-up to secure the title and the first-place prize of $110,000 CAD ($83,530 USD).

Hinnegan also earned 600 Card Player Player of the Year points for the win. This was his first ever POY-qualified score. His largest prior live tournament cash came when he finished 171st in the 2009 European Poker Tour PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $10,000 main event for $12,500.

Hinnegan entered the final day in second chip position among the remaining 11 players. The chip leader was Magni and although he and Hinnegan did not score the majority of the knock outs on the final day, they were able to accumulate and survive until short handed play and then score the eliminations necessary to set up the final heads-up showdown.

Hinnegan began with roughly a 3-to-2 chip advantage over Magni. By the time the final hand arose he had extended that lead even further. With blinds of 75,000-150,000 with an ante of 25,000 Magni limped from the button and Hinnegan checked his option.

The flop brought the KDiamond SuitQClub Suit9Club Suit and both players checked. The turn was the 6Club Suit and Hinnegan bet 200,000 from out of position. Magni made the call and the 5Spade Suit completed the board. Hinnegan bet 300,000 and Magni moved all-in. Hinnegan quickly made the call with the JDiamond Suit10Diamond Suit for the king-high straight. Magni had rivered two pair with the QSpade Suit5Club Suit but it wasn’t enough and he was eliminated in second place, earning $78,000 CAD ($59,230 USD).

Congratulations to the latest CPPT champion Brady Hinnegan! The next stop on the tour will be the CPPT Card Player Cruises event that takes place on a seven-night Pacific coastal cruise departing on Sept. 16. For more information about the Card Player Poker Tour, click here.
