A mixed field of 191 poker celebs, online whizz kids, and unknown hopefuls took to the floor yesterday for the first day of the World Series Of Poker Europe in London. Norwegian Annette Obrestad unconventionally celebrated her 20th birthday on the felt on day 1A of the £1,500 no-limit hold’em freezeout.Max Pescatori

Italian pirate Max Pescatori went out early after a three-way pot. Andrew Teng kick-started the action with a 150 raise preflop, Pescatori called, and William Martin bumped it up to 550. Both players called. It was checks all around after a 365 flop. The turn came the 3 and Teng bet 900. Pescatori made it 2,000, Martin pushed all in, Teng and Pescatori called. Martin had Teng dominated with aces versus kings, but needed to avoid a seven and a club with Pescatori holding 98. Martin’s aces held, and Pescatori dropped off the radar, while Teng was reduced to a small blip upon it.

Frenchman Michel 'The Abacus' Abecassis took advantage of a two-for-one offer, eliminating two players in one go. All the action went down preflop with all-ins a-plenty. Abecassis held A-K against Graham Wheldon's Q-Q and another player's J-J. A king on the flop gave Abecassis the winning hand, and it was game over for the other two.

Two notables following them to the rail shortly after were Phil Ivey and Mike 'Timex' McDonald. Ivey’s straight ran into Johnny Cooke’s quad fives. 'Timex' picked up a pocket pair of heartless aces, which were no match for his opponent’s KxJ which made a flush on the turn.

Brit Roland de Wolfe’s tournament death was marked when he picked up 78 and was all-in on a flop of 996. He looked like he was well set but actually only had two outs as his opponent had flopped a full house with 96. Before leaving the table, he said, “At least I can't say I did anything wrong,” but then added, “Maybe getting out of bed.”

Another Brit, Richard Ashby got all his chips in with Q-Q against Darren Fuller's A-K. The coin was flipped with a king on the flop, and Ashby waved goodbye.Jason Gray

The rapid rate of eliminations led to the tournament directors’ decision to finish play earlier than expected, at level 8 instead of 10.

42 players will return on Sunday for day 2. The chip leaders include:

Daniel Negreanu 74,900
Jason Gray 72,800
David La Ronde 57,000
Brandon Cantu 54,200
Willie Tann 52,500
Yevgeniy Timoshenko 50,800
