The first PokerStars.com European Poker Tour Hungarian Open, held at the Sofitel Hotel, Budapest, Hungary, is significant insomuch as it is further proof that the live poker economy is alive and kicking in these straitened times. Day 1A of the €4,000 buy-in event sold out its 250 capacity with 262 players taking to the felt today.

Among them were Dani “Ansky” Stern, Ed Sabat, Barny Boatman, Paul Testud, Danny Ryan, Marcel Luske, Katja Thater, Andreas Krause, Fintan Gavin, Annette Obrestad, Dave Colclough, Markus Golser, and Sorel Mizzi.

As is his wont, Mizzi was mixing it up from the get-go. At the beginning of level 2 he raised a pot to 250 from the cutoff, and all three players in the pot called. On a flop of 9 8 7, he bet again for 700. Two players dropped out, and one called. The turn fell 2, and after it was checked to him, Mizzi bet again, this time for 1,100, but still couldn't shake is opponent. The river came Q and, it was checked to Mizzi, who once again bet -- this time 2,150. His opponent seemed disappointed and folded quickly, and Mizzi raked in the chips, bringing his stack to around 15,000.

Sitting at the table next to him, his teammate Annette Obrestad was also on the up with around 13,300 in chips.

A little deeper into level 2, Hendon Mobster Barny Boatman checked on a board of J 7 6, and his short-stacked opponent bet to 1,000. Boatman reraised to 2,000, putting his opponent all in, and the players turned over their cards. Boatman showed J 10, while his opponent out-kicked him with A J. Neither the turn nor river gave Boatman a 10, and he lost the pot, bringing his stack back down to 8,300.

Shortly after this hand, Barny Boatman busted out of the tournament.

Mizzi meanwhile was to-ing and fro-ing. On a flop of Q 10 6 , the online pro bet 675. Seat 9 called, and the turn fell the J. Mizzi checked, seat 9 bet 2,000, and Mizzi went into the tank. He then bet enough to put seat 9 all in, and seat 9 called. Mizzi showed K J and seat 9 revealed Q 10 for two pair. It wasn't to be for the young Canadian, as Mizzi didn't hit any of his outs when the 2 fell on the river. Mizzi was knocked back to 11,000 chips.

Annette ObrestadDuring the last level many players in the vicinity of Annette Obrestad were suffering enormously at the hands of the miniature dynamo.

She rocked the boat and tipped it over in a pot with four others. With 14,000 in the pot preflop, the cards fell 9 4 2 , seat 4 went all in for 4,900, seat 6 called, and the brightly-shirted seat 2 also called. Obrestad threw a grenade in the middle by pushing her enormous stack all in. Seat 6 folded, and seat 2 in the smart pink shirt called after thinking for a few moments. Obrestad revealed 2 2 , seat 4 showed Q 9 , and seat 2, 8 8 . Things looked pretty great for Obrestad, but she wasn't finished, as the turn and river sealed the deal with the 6 and 2 for quad twos.

The total prize pool stands at €2,128,000, and the payouts are as follows:
