Tony Hachem (pictured right) continued to stake his claim as the best player in the history of the PokerStars Australia New Zealand Poker Tour on Sunday, March 21 when he won the $2,500 no-limit hold’em main event in Perth, Australia. It was the sixth cash for Hachem on the tour, and he was awarded $132,750 for the first-place finish. It was his first ANZPT title.
Hachem was the most dominant player at ANZPT events during season one of the tour. The Team PokerStars Australia pro won the ANZPT season one player of the year award thanks to cashes at Adelaide (15th), Sydney (17th), Melbourne (16th), and Queenstown (18th). Hachem may be well on his way to repeating as ANZPT POY once again thanks to his first victory on the tour and a seventh-place finish at ANZPT Adelaide in February.
Hachem defeated Aleks Lackovic in the heads-up final at the tournament after just 10 minutes of play between the final two. Lackovic held A-K and Hachem held pocket jacks for the final coin-flip. The jacks held, and Hachem won the tournament after seven hours at the final table. Lackovic was eliminated in second place, and he took home $84,250 as a consolation prize. Hachem left promptly after the final table to catch a flight to play in the Asia Pacific Poker Tour Manila Pagcor Chairman’s Cup, where there is a $1 million-guaranteed prize pool.
It appeared heading into the final table on Sunday that there was going to be a local champion crowned in Perth. Zaffer Soemya led the way with 1,016,000, and five other local players from Perth (including Lackovic) were present at the final table. Four of those local players held the four largest chip stacks heading into the final day after a six-hour play-down period on day 3 where they built their stacks. Hachem entered the final table in fifth chip-position with 458,000 and he was able to pull off the comeback and win the tournament at the final table.
Here is a look at the final table results:
1: Tony Hachem (Australia) — $132,750
