Dennis PhillipsThe Foxwoods Mega Stack Challenge began today at Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Connecticut. The first event was a $340 no-limit hold’em event that attracted 925 players. The top 100 will get paid and the top prize is $67,294. 2002 World Series of Poker champion Robert Varkonyi highlights the field.

There will be two other events that will run during the 16th edition of this tournament series, and they include a $560 no-limit hold’em event (begins May 13) with a $125,000 guaranteed prize pool, and the $1,650 no-limit hold’em main event. This tournament series is one of four Mega Stack Challenge events that will be hosted in 2010. The first took place in February, and the other two will run Aug. 17-23, and Dec. 14-20.

The main event will feature a $250,000 guaranteed prize pool and it begins on Saturday, May 15. The main event will run for three days and crown a champion on Monday, May 17. Previous November Nine members Dennis Phillips (pictured above right) and Kevin Schaffel will be co-hosting the main event, and the two players will be available to sign autographs throughout the tournament. They will also be playing in single-table sit-and-goes during the event. Foxwoods spokesperson and poker professional Bernard Lee will be on hand as well.

The last Mega Stack Challenge main event attracted a field of 224 players and the champion was Card Player Player of the Year contender Dwyte Pilgrim. He took home $50,145 in prize money and 528 points for the win (one of his four tournament victories in 2010). Other notable cashes at the previous Mega Stack Challenge included Todd Terry and Will Failla.
