European Player Profile
Oct 01, '08
“Rocky” Ross is a well-known British actor who also happens to be a spot-on poker player as well. The younger brother of the Hendon Mob’s Barny Boatman, Ross is considered more of a poker pro than of an actor if you ask those on the European poker scene.
Having won titles in Austria, Ireland, and Britain, this television phenomenon quickly proved he belonged at the tables and was the top money winner in the European circuit in 2002.
Probably best-known for his starring role on “London’s Burning,” Britain’s most successful drama series, Boatman can switch gears at the table in a heartbeat. Thanks to his skills as an actor, Boatman is an always difficult read.
Boatman and the other members of The Hendon Mob are now representatives of Full Tilt Poker.

Storylines/Big Hands:
Rousso Raises, Reconsiders, Releases
The player under-the-gun limped and so did the player to his left. Action folded around to Vanessa Rousso in the small blind who completed. The big blind checked and they saw a 4-way flop. The flop rolled out 863 and the first three players checked. The player in seat 8 bet 1,600 and was quickly raised by Rousso to 4,100 total. Action folded back around to the player in seat 9, who, after some deliberation, made the call. Rousso checked the 10 on the turn and her opponent bet 4,000. Rousso went into the tank. Shuffling, spinning and stacking her chips, “Lady Maverick” considered making a move. She thought better of it however, and laid the hand down. Despite losing the hand she still sits behind a stack of 41,000.
Bjorin Bouncing Back
Chris Bjorin has made a nice comeback in the latter stages of level four. Once down below 10,000 in chips, Bjorin now sits at just over 40,000, thanks in part to one recent hand. A player from early position raised to 900 and Bjorin called. The flop came A65, and after a check, Bjorin bet 1500. His opponent called. The turn was the 2 and both players checked. The board paired with the 6 on the river, and Bjorin led out for 2500. His opponent made the call and Bjorin showed AK. His opponent mucked.
Main Event a Loss for Hendon’s Ross
Noted Hendon Mob player Ross Boatman took his stand by getting all his chips into the pot pre-flop with A3. To Boatman’s disappointment, his opponent had him dominated with AQ. “Any three will do,” Boatman requested of the dealer as the flop was dealt. Boatman’s disappointment intensified as he gazed at a flop of K72. The J on the turn offered no help, and Boatman headed for the rail at the sight of the 10 on the river giving his opponent a needless straight.
Golser Getting it Done
Few players want to mess with Marcus Golser at his table, but at least one player survived an all-in battle with the pro from Austria. Golser has about 90,000 to dominate his table, and he’s been putting on a clinic. In one series of hands, he limped from under the gun for 300, and was then the lone caller after a raise to 1100 from middle position. The flop came 932, and after Golser checked, his opponent bet 1100 and Golser called. That brought checks from both players when the 4 came on the turn. When the 6 came on the river, Golser led out for 3000 and his shortstacked opponent folded.
The next hand as the big blind, play was folded to the small blind who limped to see the flop come J108. After the small blind checked, Golser bet 400 and won the pot.
Then as the small blind, Golser saw one limper call for 300. He raised to 1700 and took it down uncontested.
It was only as the button that Golser hit a minor speed bump. A player from middle position raised to 900, and Golser went to 1700. His opponent reraised all-in for 9,925 and Golser called. The other player held JJ, while Golser showed AK. The board finished 109873 and Golser’s big stack took a minor hit.
Check and Raise Doesn’t Faze Kathy Liebert
While the Independence Day fireworks could be heard booming outside the Rio, Kathy Liebert saw fireworks of her own at table No. 17 in the orange section of the Amazon Room. Liebert raised to a total of 900 from under-the-gun and the action folded to the blinds. Both the small blind and the big blind called, and the dealer put down a flop of 643. The action checked to Liebert, who continued her aggression by making a bet of 2,000. The small blind check-raised to a total of 5,000 and the big blind folded. After contemplating for a moment, Liebert reraised an additional 5,000. The small blind quickly mucked his cards with a highly frustrated sigh. Liebert’s stack stood at over 40,000 after the hand.
Kravchenko Flops a Five, Stays Alive
Alex Kravchenko flopped a set of fives and collected bets from his opponent on every street. The pot put Kravchenko’s stack above 25,000 for the first time this level.

Big Hands:
Ross Boatman Eliminated
Ross Boatman and Clonie Gowen limped into a dry pot when Nick Gibson raised to 16,500 behind them. Boatman reraised all in for about 40,000, Gowen fodled and Gibson made the call. Both players turned over their cards.
Boatman: AKK6
Gibson: AA58
Board: QJJ37
Boatman got it in with kings agianst Gibson's pocket aces. Both players flopped a pair of jacks, giving them each two pair, Gibson of course having the nut two pair. The turn and river failed to improve Boatman's hand an he was eliminated at the begining of Level 13.
Kido Pham Doubles Through Rob Hollink
Rob Hollink raised to 7,000 from under the gun and got four callers. The flop came 986, and Hollink bet 9,000. Kido Pham raised to 20,000, the other two players folded, and Hollink called. The turn was the A, and Hollink bet enough to put Pham all in. Pham called for the rest of his chips and Hollink had him covered. Both players turned over their cards.
Hollink: A1042
Pham: A1096
Pham flopped two pair (nines and sixes) and turned aces up (aces and nines). Hollink flopped the nut flush, an inside straight draw, and what he thought was overcards, turning top pair to go along with all of his draws. The river was the case ace (A), giving Hollink trip aces to the ten, and giving Pham a full boat, aces full of nines. Pham raked the pot and slightly more than doubled up to 160,000 while Hollink fell down to just under 100,000.
Dario Alioto Chips Up, Eliminates Thayer Rasmussen and Alberto Romero in Same Hand
Alberto Romero raised to 10,500 from middle position and both Thayer Rasmussen and Dario Alioto made the call. The flop came Q96, and Romero fired 36,000 chips into the pot. Alioto raised to 144,000 and both Rasmussen and Romero called all in. With their tournament lives on the line, Alioto had them both covered as all three players turned over their cards.
Alioto: AJ109
Romero: AA104
Rasmussen: J1098
Alito flopped a a pair of nines, the nut straight draw and the nut re-draw while Romero held the over pair (aces) and Rasmussen made the open-ended straight draw and a club flush draw to go along with his pair of nines on the flop. Rasmussen's straight draw was useless however as Alioto held the same jack-ten straight draw and the ace, meaning that if the king came, Alioto would have the higher straight to the ace. The turn was the 9, giving both Rasmussen and Alioto trip nines, Alioto leading with the ace kicker. The river was the 2, and Dario Alioto had just eliminated both Thayer Rasmussen and Alberto Romero in the same hand, climbing up the chip ladder to the no. 2 spot with roughly 450,000.

Big Hands:
Pot-Limit Omaha: Top Two Chops it Up for Corkins and Opponent
On a board of AT97, Hoyt Corkins raised his opponent’s 1,000 bet to a total of 3,000. His opponent called, and the 7 river was dealt. Both players checked, and Hoyt showed ATK5 for two pair, aces and 10s. His opponent turned over AJT3, and the pot was split.
Pot-Limit Omaha: Doyle’s Two Pair No Good
Facing a raise to 500 from the player on the button, Doyle Brunson elected to defend his big blind. The flop came JT5. Brunson checked, his opponent bet 800, and he called. The Q turn was dealt, generating checks from both opponents. On the 4 river, Doyle made a 2,700 pot-sized bet, which was called by his opponent. Doyle turned over AQT2 for two pair, queens and tens. His opponent held the 98 for the low end of the straight, and dragged the pot.
No-Limit Hold’em: Minieri Stacks More Chips
On a board of KT755, Dario Minieri’s opponent checked and Minieri fired a bet of 6,100. His opponent folded, and Minieri won the pot. With this pot Minieri now has around 23,000 in chips.
2-7 Triple Draw: David Oppenheim Stands Pat, Pads Stack
David Oppenheim opened for a raise from the under-the-gun position and was called by the player in the small blind. Both players drew two cards, with Oppenheim betting when checked to by his opponent. The bet was called, with the other player drawing two cards and Oppenheim standing pat on the next round. The action was identical: Oppenheim’s opponent checked, and David’s bet was called. During the final drawing round, Oppenheim again stood pat and his opponent drew one card and called Oppenheim’s last bet. Oppenheim turned over 87532, and his opponent mucked.
2-7 Triple Draw: Madsen Vs. Brunson
Doyle Brunson opened for a raise during the 2-7 triple draw round and was called by Jeff Madsen on the button and the player in the big blind. Both the big blind and Doyle drew two, and Madsen stood pat. The players checked to Madsen who bet and was called twice. The big blind and Doyle drew one card on the second draw, and again Madsen stood pat. Again the action was checked to Madsen, who checked behind prompting Doyle to say, “Gosh, dang it!” The third draw brought discards of one from Doyle and the big blind, as well as another pat from Madsen. Again Madsen was checked to and said, “What do I do with this hand?” He turned over T8762, and both his opponents mucked.
Limit Hold’em: Two Hold’em World Champs Mix it Up
In the limit hold’em round, Johnny Chan raised from the button and was called by Chris Ferguson in the big blind. Ferguson checked the K65 flop and called Chan’s bet. When the 8 fell on the turn, Ferguson bet and Chan released his hand. Ferguson finished the hand with slightly more than 12,000 in chips.
Omaha 8 or Better: Raymer Gets Quartered on River
After limping from middle position, Greg Raymer called a raise from the player to his immediate left. The flop fell 852, and Raymer checked. His opponent bet, and Raymer check-raised. His opponent reraised, and Raymer called. The Q on the turn caused Raymer to bet, and his opponent called. The 5 fell on the river, and again Raymer bet. This time he was raised by his opponent, and Raymer called. His opponent showed A534 with ace-trey for the nut low and three fives for high. “Nice catch. You needed it,” declared Raymer as he turned over AQ43. Raymer had the same nut low, but his top pair for high was no good for the high. Raymer ended up with a quarter of the pot. If his opponent had failed to improve on the river, Raymer would have quartered his opponent.
