Esfandiari made the call and the players turned over their cards: Giang: J Giang flopped a straight but his flush draw was dead to Esfandiari’s better draw that went along with his two pair. Midway through the level, the tournament staff announced through the speakers that “1989 World Chammpion Phil Hellmuth has just been eliminated.” The Amazon Room erupted in cheers and applause after hearing the announcement, not quite the reaction anyone would care for. Hellmuth had been playing on the secondary feature table and made his grand entrance with UFC fighter Wanderlei Silva. He was officially TKO’d. We caught up with the action after the draw. Frank Kassela fired a bet of 4,000 into the pot with Freddy Deeb and Brett Richey next to act. Deeb pondered his decision for awhile and made the call. Richey did not hesitate as long to make the call. A wry grin appeared on Kassela’s face as he turned over 7-7-5-4-3. “That didn’t go quite the way I planned,” he joked. Deeb then addressed Richey, saying that if he didn’t have a pair he had the pot. Richey turned over 10-8-6-5-2 and took down the pot. Richey was once extremely short but clawed back to 24,000 after the hand. Kassela was at 32,000 while Deeb was at 34,000. Cantu Bets Out Richey A few hands after the one against Deeb and Kassela, Brett Richey called a raise by Brandon Cantu before the draw. Richey then elected to take one card while Cantu did the same. Carlos Mortensen bet 1,000 to the surprise of Jean-Robert Bellande. “Did you just bet blind?” Bellande asked. “I had to,” Mortensen replied. “You drew two and I just took one.” Bellande made the call and Mortensen announced he had a king-low. Bellande showed Q-10-6-3-2 and took down the pot. He was at 8,000 with two add-ons while Mortensen was at 20,000 with one add-on. Elezra Shoves, Heimiller Can’t Call Eli Elezra raised to 1,150 before the draw and Dan Heimiller made the call. On the draw, both players decided to stand pat. Elezra then shoved for 5,800. “Is that because I just called?” Heimiller asked. He tanked for a long time but eventually mucked his hand. Elezra took the pot and was at 9,000 with three add-ons while Heimiller was at 13,000 with two add-ons.
We caught up with this hand at showdown. Tom Dwan had tabled 6-6-9-3-2 for a pair of sixes. John Monnette was his opponent and he stared at Dwan’s board for a bit before finally nodding his head and mucking his hand. Dwan took down the 1,200 chip pot and he was at 13,500 with all of his add-ons intact. Monnette was at 13,000 with two add-ons behind. Sheikhan’s Eight Is Better Than Yours The player in seat 1 moved all in before the draw and Shawn Sheikhan made the call. Sheikhan drew one card and his opponent showed 8-7-6-4-3. It was a tough hand to beat, but Sheikhan did just that as he turned over 8-6-5-4-3 to the disbelief of his opponent. Sheikhan raked in the pot and was at 17,000 with his three add-ons intact. Mueller Bests Heimiller Greg Mueller, Dan Heimiller and Eli Elezra each had 400 invested in the pot before the draw. Each player took two cards and Mueller led out with 1,100. Elezra called but Heimiller eventually made the call. Mueller then turned over 9-8-7-5-3 and Heimiller mucked. Mueller was a late entrant in the tournament but was up to 8,500 with his three add-ons intact.
Chad Brown raised to 500 before the draw and Phil Ivey made the call. Ivey took two cards and Brown stood pat. Ivey then took a stab at the pot with 1,100. Brown made the quick call and Ivey announced that he had a 9-8 low. Brown turned over 9-5-4-3-2 and Ivey mucked his hand, sending the pot to Brown. Brown was at 14,000 with all three add-ons while Ivey was at 21,425 and no add-ons remaining. Left In The Deck Field Officially Tops Last Year The official number of entrants was released during level three. There were 101 players who registered for the event, topping last year’s number by five. The prize pool totaled $948,400 with 14 places getting paid. The first player to cash will earn $19,272 and the winner will take home $294,321. Daniel Alaei got all of his chips in before the draw against Daniel Negreanu. Alaei drew one with his 9-8-5-4 and Negreanu also drew one with his 8-4-3-2. Alaei caught a K and Negreanu caught a Q to give Negreanu the pot as he is just below the 100,000 chip mark. Nicholas Broncato Eliminated Peter Gould opened to 3,400 and was met with a three-bet by Michael Mizrachi on the button to 8,500. Nicholas Broncato was in the big blind and moved all-in for his last 32,500. Gould took a while before making the call and Mizrachi got out of the way. Broncato took one and tabled his 7-6-4-2 and Gould stood pat with his 8-5-4-3-2. Gould was dealt a 6 and he was sent to the rail, while Gould climbed to 108,000. Durrr Moves Chips to Take Pot Tom Dwan made it 4,100 under-the-gun and was called by Nick Schulman in teh cutoff. John Juanda was on the button and opted to reraise to 16,500. Dwan went into the tank before announcing that he was all-in. Schulman and Juanda both folded. Dwan showed a 3 after shuffling through his cards and is up to 88,000. Schulman has 83,000 and Juanda dropped to 42,000. Cantu Feeds the Bear We missed the action, but we saw Barry Greenstein doubling through Brandon Cantu as Greensteins 8-6 low bested Cantu’s 8-7. Baxter Takes a Small One Eli Elezra opened to 3,500 and both Billy Baxter and Nick Schulman came along for the ride. Schulman drew two, Baxter drew one, and Elezra stood pat. We caught up with this hand after the draw. Carlos Mortensen bet 1,000 to the surprise of Jean-Robert Bellande. “Did you just bet blind?” Bellande asked. “I had to,” Mortensen replied. “You drew two and I just took one.” Bellande made the call and Mortensen announced he had a king-low. Bellande showed Q-10-6-3-2 and took down the pot. He was at 8,000 with two add-ons while Mortensen was at 20,000 with one add-on. Elezra Shoves, Heimiller Can’t Call Eli Elezra raised to 1,150 before the draw and Dan Heimiller made the call. On the draw, both players decided to stand pat. Elezra then shoved for 5,800. “Is that because I just called?” Heimiller asked. He tanked for a long time but eventually mucked his hand. Elezra took the pot and was at 9,000 with three add-ons while Heimiller was at 13,000 with two add-ons.
We caught up with this hand at showdown. Tom Dwan had tabled 6-6-9-3-2 for a pair of sixes. John Monnette was his opponent and he stared at Dwan’s board for a bit before finally nodding his head and mucking his hand. Dwan took down the 1,200 chip pot and he was at 13,500 with all of his add-ons intact. Monnette was at 13,000 with two add-ons behind. Sheikhan’s Eight Is Better Than Yours The player in seat 1 moved all in before the draw and Shawn Sheikhan made the call. Sheikhan drew one card and his opponent showed 8-7-6-4-3. It was a tough hand to beat, but Sheikhan did just that as he turned over 8-6-5-4-3 to the disbelief of his opponent. Sheikhan raked in the pot and was at 17,000 with his three add-ons intact. Mueller Bests Heimiller Greg Mueller, Dan Heimiller and Eli Elezra each had 400 invested in the pot before the draw. Each player took two cards and Mueller led out with 1,100. Elezra called but Heimiller eventually made the call. Mueller then turned over 9-8-7-5-3 and Heimiller mucked. Mueller was a late entrant in the tournament but was up to 8,500 with his three add-ons intact.
Chad Brown raised to 500 before the draw and Phil Ivey made the call. Ivey took two cards and Brown stood pat. Ivey then took a stab at the pot with 1,100. Brown made the quick call and Ivey announced that he had a 9-8 low. Brown turned over 9-5-4-3-2 and Ivey mucked his hand, sending the pot to Brown. Brown was at 14,000 with all three add-ons while Ivey was at 21,425 and no add-ons remaining. There were 101 players who registered for the event, topping last year’s number by five. The prize pool totaled $948,400 with 14 places getting paid. Daniel Alaei got all of his chips in before the draw against Daniel Negreanu. Alaei drew one with his 9-8-5-4 and Negreanu also drew one with his 8-4-3-2. Alaei caught a K and Negreanu caught a Q to give Negreanu the pot as he is just below the 100,000 chip mark. Nicholas Broncato Eliminated Peter Gould opened to 3,400 and was met with a three-bet by Michael Mizrachi on the button to 8,500. Nicholas Broncato was in the big blind and moved all-in for his last 32,500. Gould took a while before making the call and Mizrachi got out of the way. Broncato took one and tabled his 7-6-4-2 and Gould stood pat with his 8-5-4-3-2. Gould was dealt a 6 and he was sent to the rail, while Gould climbed to 108,000. Durrr Moves Chips to Take Pot Tom Dwan made it 4,100 under-the-gun and was called by Nick Schulman in teh cutoff. John Juanda was on the button and opted to reraise to 16,500. Dwan went into the tank before announcing that he was all-in. Schulman and Juanda both folded. Dwan showed a 3 after shuffling through his cards and is up to 88,000. Baxter Takes a Small One Eli Elezra opened to 3,500 and both Billy Baxter and Nick Schulman came along for the ride. Schulman drew two, Baxter drew one, and Elezra stood pat. In the first hand after the 20 minute break, Phil Ivey raised to 7,200 from the button and was called by Eli Elezra and Patrik Antonius. Phil Hellmuth and Erik Seidel tangled in a hand that is still driving the Poker Brat nuts. Picking up the action after seventh street, Seidel showed down A Hellmuth was showing K Oppenheim Adds To Hellmuth’s Frustration Picking up the action on fifth street, Phil Hellmuth bet and David Oppenheim called. The action reversed on sixth and seventh street as Oppenheim was the one leading out. Hellmuth called the bet on sixth street, but could not do so on seventh street, revealing his hand A Oppenheim was at 290,000 after the pot while Hellmuth was at 105,000. Bach Doubles Through David Singer We caught up with the action on fifth street. David Bach put in a bet of 10,000, leaving himself just 800 behind. Singer raised to put him all in and Bach made the easy call. After the last two cards were dealt, Bach showed J Singer could not beat that and Bach doubled up to 60,000 after starting with 25,000.
Mike Matusow was all in for his last 17,000 against George Lind. Here is how there boards ran out: Lind: 7 Matusow started with three spades but then caught three hearts. He ended up making two pair but Lind’s diamond flush was enough to get the high and Matusow did not qualify for a low, leaving him with nothing but a story to tell on his way to the exit. No Limit Hold’em Oh Snap, The Glasses Came Off Already fuming from irritating previous hands, Phil Hellmuth got heads up against Erik Seidel and the flop came J Hellmuth instantly ripped his sunglasses off and began gesturing toward the board in disbelief while talking to himself. This continued for a few minutes after he folded, causing Seidel to eventually laugh out loud as Hellmuth talked about how Erik was going to hang himself in the tournament. He made it 81,000 to go and Baker went into the tank. After a few moments he finally released his hand and Seidel took home the pot. He started the hand with 373,000 and was up to 415,000. Baker Bets Out Schmelev, Part One Vladimir Schmelev raised preflop and the action was on David Baker on the button. He repopped it to 65,000 from the button and the blinds mucked. The action was then on Schmelev who tanked for a few before calling.
