In this "Strip Poker" series, Card Player covers the Las Vegas poker scene - on the Strip and around the city.
The U.S. leg of the National Poker League's worldwide tour began Sunday at the Venetian Resort Hotel and Casino with the first event of the Vegas Open. The $2,500 buy-in no-limit hold'em event attracted 61 players and produced a stacked final table that ended with poker pro Kathy Liebert winning the nearly $56,000 first-place prize.
She went heads up for the title with Chuck Kelley, who recently placed second at the World Poker Tour Winter Poker Open. Kelley was forced to settle for second place once again but took home almost $35,000 for his efforts. Card Player Player of the Year contenders Tom Schneider and James Van Alstyne were also at the final table and finished in third and fourth place, respectively. Rounding out the players who cashed in the event is Dorothy Van Sachsen of Boyoton Beach, Florida.
The $2,500 buy-in no-limit hold'em preliminary events continue, with tournaments starting today and tomorrow at noon. On Thursday at noon, a $540 buy-in satellite will take place to award seats into Friday's $5,000 buy-in event.
Festivities will conclude with a $15,000 buy-in no-limit hold'em championship event at noon on Monday, Dec. 3. Winners from the United Kingdom Open, Asia Open, Australian Open, and Vegas Open have already reserved a spot in this event and will all compete in the televised NPL Championship. Players who have not yet qualified can buy-in directly or compete in one of the two $1,060 buy-in satellites scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 1 and Sunday, Dec. 2 at 3 p.m. to win a seat.
