Mystery Bounty Event Puts New Twist On Traditional Bounty Tournaments

The World Series of Poker announced Thursday morning that there are 17 new events on the 2020 schedule, including several that are being dubbed part of their “Freezeout Series.”

In response to the poker world clamoring for more events with a freezeout structure, the WSOP announced six new events with buy-ins between $500 and $5,000 that will not allow re-entries. Headlining those new freezeout events is the $1,500 mystery bounty no-limit hold’em.

The mystery bounty functions nearly identical to a regular bounty tournament, but there is a small twist. While every player in the field will have a $100 bounty on their head, a randomly selected 100 players will have bounties worth much more.

There will be 80 bounties worth $2,500, 10 bounties worth $10,000, six bounties worth $25,000, three bounties worth $100,000 and one $250,000 bounty. In total, there are $1 million up for grabs in mystery bounties.

A notable addition to the schedule is the price change for the now $25,000 heads-up no-limit hold’em. Historically, this event was at a $10,000 price point, but when it was left off the championship event schedule, there was speculation that the event had been scratched.

Players are encouraged to register as early as possible for the heads-up event as the field will be capped at 64 players and will take place on the first Sunday of the series.

Another new price point in play for the upcoming summer is the $250,000 buy-in super high roller no-limit hold’em. It will be the biggest buy-in on the schedule and one of the bigger buy-ins in the history of the WSOP behind only the seven-figure buy-in for the Big One For One Drop in 2012, 2014 and 2018.

The super high roller will kickoff on June 27, but there were a few other high-stakes events announced Thursday. There is a $25,000 no-limit hold’em 8-handed event near the start of the series on May 29 and a $50,000 pot-limit Omaha high roller scheduled for July 7.

Other new additions include a $2,500 nine-game mix, a $5,000 no-limit hold’em/pot-limit Omaha, a $1,000 “Forty Stack” no-limit hold’em and a $1,500 “Fifty Stack” no-limit hold’em. The forty stack will start with 40,000 in tournament chips and the fifty stack will give players a 50,000-chip starting stack.

“New events are always a result of player input and we’re thankful to have received many great suggestions this year,” said WSOP Vice President Jack Effel. “The 2020 WSOP is chock-full of new events, new price points and a little mystery sure to resonate with poker players everywhere. We can’t wait to open our doors in four short months to get things started.”

The 2020 WSOP is scheduled to run from May 26 to July 15, 2020. Here is a look at all 17 new events announced for this summer:
